Chris Jordan
Andrew introduced me to Chris Jordan during my presentation and after checking him out, his artwork is just mind blowing. His images are evoking and really brings to a wake up call to what we are doing to our environment, or even ourselves. Every time you zoom in from a large scale image, you realize it is made out of a certain entity. The statistics that he provides are just astonishing: with the paper cups that we use each day, number of prisoners in the states, deaths from smoking, breast augmentation, and many more… It is amazing how us human beings are not aware of all the things we are consuming each day and being so careless to how it will affect our planet or even ourselves. His creation in these large scale photographs are to show how unconscious we are of our surrounding and culture.

I went through the Illingworth Kerr Gallery today with a few students from MADT and was reminded that we have two GREAT examples of artists with strong political content right here in the building! John Gerrard and Glen Ligon should be looked at very carefully to see how subtlety and seduction can be great tools to elicit engagement in a political dialogue. The Gerrard work deals with both natural resources politics and industrial farming. Ligon with issues of racism.
You should really spend some time in these exhibitions. I think they are right up your alley.

This might be slightly off topic but I know that you’re interested in photography and documenting events. Jonathan Harris loves documenting everything he does with photography, sketch books, etc. What makes him stand out for me is that he has this obsession with the idea, or rather ideas, of telling stories. I think he’s worth checking out.
